Swimming, Saunas and Steam Room: The Benefits

Did you know about the many health benefits from doing simple and enjoyable activities such as swimming and using saunas/steam rooms? Have a look below and discover how doing these simple things can improve your overall health!

Swimming.

Swimming helps individuals lose weight. When an individual swims for just 30 minutes they can expect to burn at least 367 calories!

Not only can you expect to lose weight, muscles are also strengthened though regularly swimming. The movements made in the water are much harder to do than out with the water, so you can be sure your muscles are getting the best kind of work out when you swim.

People who swim are also said to have less sleeping difficulties than those who don’t. Swimming reduces insomnia and stops the body waking up too early, as well as improving mental health by reducing stress levels, improving your mood and improving self-esteem.

Of course, the main advantage of swimming is the fact that swimming is good for your heart and a great form of cardiovascular exercise. But, it’s also proven to control blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol. So by swimming regularly, you’re less likely to develop issues such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Saunas and Steam Rooms.

Sitting in a sauna or a steam room allows the body to increase its temperature and therefore increase an individual’s heart rate, allowing their blood vessels to widen. This increase in circulation allows for a healthy amount of blood to flow around the body and can be beneficial for most individuals but especially those who suffer from sore muscles, sore joints and arthritis.

Being in this hot and relaxing environment also reduces stress levels and as a result puts less strain on the heart. This reduces the likelihood of heart related issues i.e. heart disease and heart attacks.

Steam rooms are also commonly known to help those with respiratory conditions such as coughs or lung problems because the humidity within a steam room helps soothe the respiratory system.

As well as this, steam rooms are also beneficial to those who want to hydrate their skin as the moisture helps heal dry skin.

It is important to remember that although there are many benefits to using saunas, you must still be careful when using them! Saunas/steam rooms can cause dehydration, so it is important that individuals make sure they drink plenty of water and limit the amount of time in the sauna.
